Samsung: Revolutionising Mobile Technology with Hybrid AI
The era of mobile AI is one of the most exciting and historic moments in technology, says Won-joon Choi, Head of Mobile R&D Office, Mobile eXperience Business, at Samsung Electronics.
Samsung has introduced Galaxy AI features on its S24 series, Samsung’s first AI phone. To bring the benefits of Gen AI to the Galaxy S24 series Samsung took a hybrid approach to its AI integration.
“AI offers so many possibilities and we believe mobile devices are the primary access point for unlocking its potential as users around the globe continue to rely on their phones for most of their day-to-day needs,” said Won-joon.
Samsung's hybrid approach to AI
Samsung believes a hybrid approach is both a practical and reliable solution to meet consumer needs. It provides users with a balance of the instant responsiveness and privacy assurance of on-device AI, as well as the versatility of cloud-based AI, owing to open collaborations with industry partners.
Won-joon expects that more mobile AI features will be incorporated inside mobile devices as the intelligent computing power of the latest chips – such as NPUs – advance, which will allow more people to embrace AI.
“This exciting news is all part of the extension of our commitment to Galaxy AI and entering the next phase of the mobile AI era,” he explained. “The introduction of Galaxy AI on Galaxy S24 series was only the start. To deliver a completely new and unique AI experience, we will further optimise the Galaxy AI experience for the upcoming foldable devices. Our foldables are the most versatile and flexible form factor in Samsung Galaxy and when combined with Galaxy AI, these two complementary technologies will together unlock all new possibilities.”
In addition to this, Samsung is keen to expand Galaxy AI experiences across the broader Galaxy ecosystem.
“As the mobile AI era moves forward at a rapid pace, Samsung is accelerating mobile AI innovations to meet the needs of not only today, but tomorrow,” Won-joon added.
Samsung Electronics and O2 Telefónica unite for new networks
Samsung Electronics has joined ranks with O2 Telefónica – one of Europe’s leading telcos – to accelerate the shift towards Open RAN and virtualised RAN (vRAN) networks, after having opened their first commercial vRAN and Open RAN site in Landsberg am Lech, in Germany.
This inaugural site deployment marks a major milestone in the companies’ collaboration to develop and test Open RAN technologies, first announced in October 2023. Following a series of extensive trials, O2 Telefónica and Samsung are now progressing from lab to field with the launch of this first commercial site.
This follows on from Telefónica having launched its €1.75bn (US$1.87bn) green bond, becoming the first European telco to do so, as part of its approach to responsible network deployment and climate change mitigation.
“Although we are facing complex and uncertain times, tremendous opportunities related to connectivity and digitalisation await,” its Chairman José María Álvarez-Pallete said.
The industry giant, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this month, has been vocal about its sustainability strides for more than a decade, working to balance growing demand for its services in light of the vast increase in energy consumption of 30% and carbon emissions of 17% industry-wide between 2010 and 2015.
