Amdocs & Google Cloud to Revolutionise eSIM Onboarding

eSIM adoption to enhance the customer experience
Following successful 5G rollouts and IoT innovation, Amdocs and Google Cloud are collaborating to enhance eSIM adoption & the customer experience

Amdocs has announced a collaboration with Google Cloud, to offer an end-to-end eSIM onboarding solution to communications service providers (CSPs). An eSIM is an ‘embedded SIM’ which is permanently attached to a device, not like a SIM which can be removed and swapped for a new one. This is bad news for phone thieves, but for the consumer, an eSIMs small size and versatility is a welcome development in mobile technology.

Software development company Amdocs is a provider of software and services to communications and media companies. Amdocs’ eSIM Cloud platform has been rated the #1 vendor in eSIM orchestration platforms by Counterpoint Research. Google Cloud was launched in 2008 and offers a suite of cloud computing services across computing, data storage, data analytics and machine learning.

eSIM development fueled by IoT advancements and the rollout of 5G networks

This collaboration is a significant step forwards in the evolution of eSIM adoption. eSIM technology has been rapidly gaining momentum in recent years, with research indicating that the global eSIM market size is projected to reach US$3.4bn by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 19.3% from 2020 to 2027. This growth is fueled by the increasing adoption of connected devices, advancements in IoT technology and the rollout of high-speed 5G networks.

Hamish White, CEO of Mobilise, spoke to Mobile Magazine to discuss the rise of eSIMs.

“At the moment, while the number of eSIM-capable devices on the market is increasing, the technology has only become commonplace among manufacturers over the last few years,” he said. “Coupled with longer customer device cycles, which mean that consumers aren’t replacing their handset as often, there’s a lag in eSIM adoption despite the capability’s inclusion in a wide range of newer handsets.”

This collaboration will enable CSPs to offer eSIM services to their customers across the world, leveraging the reach and expertise of both Amdocs’ eSIM Cloud platform and Google Cloud. The combined solution will be operated by Amdocs, with Google Cloud’s Telecom Subscriber Insights integrated.

This will offer an improved, digital-only and swift customer experience which will:
  • Simplify the activation process of eSIM-equipped devices
  • Reduce the need for physical SIM cards and visits to retail stores
  • Decrease calls to customer support.

Google Cloud and Amdocs collaboration to provide a seamless experience for customers

“Our work with Amdocs will help make it easier than ever for customers to activate their new cellular devices,” said Vivek Gupta, Director, Telco Industry, Google Cloud. “This collaboration streamlines the process of switching between phones, carriers, and more, with minimal interruptions to service, providing a seamless experience for consumers.”

“This collaboration with Google Cloud represents a significant step forward in the evolution of eSIM technology,” said Anthony Goonetilleke, Group President of Technology and Head of Strategy, Amdocs. “By offering a seamless and secure onboarding experience, CSPs can improve customer satisfaction and accelerate the adoption of eSIM worldwide.”

From 3rd - 6th March 2025, the Mobile World Congress will take place in Barcelona, Spain, to which Amdocs has previously been a guest at.
