Exclusive video: Navigating the Future of Computing

In this fireside chat, Syed Shabih Abbas, Senior Director at DXC Technology, explored key trends, challenges and success stories that shape the industry

Sparking cloud conversations, DXC Technology’s Syed Shabih Abbas graced Cloud & 5G LIVE’s virtual stage for a fireside chat with host Neil Perry.

A seasoned technology executive with more than 20 years of industry experience, Abbas is an advocate for the power of digital transformation in being a driver for powerful and effective change in organisations.

Cloud Conversations: Navigating the Future of Computing with Syed Shabih Abbas, Global Director Cloud Managed Services at DXC Technology

Abbas packed plenty into his half-hour session, where he shared insights into the evolution of cloud computing and went on a whistle-stop deep dive into key trends, challenges and success stories that shape the industry.

A key valuable insight from Abbas, among many, includes how to look into the past must be acknowledged and understood, and how demand for cloud services provides both challenges and ample opportunity, as well as the importance of data security as dependency on the cloud grows.

Tracing the foundation of cloud computing back to the mainframe era, he emphasised its transformative journey and how it will continue to evolve. “If you really think 40, 50 years back when the mainframe started —  I would say the foundation for cloud has been set up from those days. I mean, obviously with advancement, people have moved to a more virtualised distributed environment. But clearly in the last decade, computing has begun to be more recognisable in its current shape,” he said.

Identifying quantum computing, edge computing, secure access and green computing as key trends shaping the future of cloud technology, Abbas continued to stress the importance of ethical and environmentally-conscious transformation, highlighting the challenges of skill availability, convincing businesses and ensuring security.

Shedding light on the challenge of cultural change and the need for a rapid adoption of technology in the transformation process, Abbas added: “I have talked to customers, the CEOs of organisations, and when they talk about their speed to market and things that they would have done probably earlier, they would they have done in a month under half time. That's a wow factor for them.

“Not everyone in the business is still aware of that, but there needs to be a lot of cultural change, a speed of adoption with the right set of technology that can still create that wow factor.”
