Strategies Drive Sustainability Transformation with T-Mobile

Chad Wilkerson discusses T-Mobile's aims to offer unbeatable connectivity while being environmentally conscious

The race towards a more sustainable future has seen T-Mobile, a leading US telecom provider, making bold environmental commitments. From embracing renewable energy to aiming for net-zero emissions by 2040, T-Mobile’s initiatives showcase its dedication to a greener planet while maintaining its renowned network service quality.

Building a resilient network sustainably

In the telecom world, T-Mobile stands out not only for its large and efficient 5G network but also for its commitment to sustainability. Chad Wilkerson, the Director of Sustainability, emphasised the importance of minimising environmental impact while meeting customers’ increasing demands for reliable connectivity. 
By powering its extensive network entirely with renewable energy and designing energy-efficient equipment, T-Mobile is helping pave the way for a more sustainable future in telecommunications. “We were the first in the US wireless industry to set and achieve a 100% renewable energy goal,” says Wilkerson, highlighting the company's success in providing 24/7 connectivity without compromising on environmental responsibilities.

Tackling Scope 3 emissions in T-Mobile’s supply chain

Another area where T-Mobile is making strides is in addressing emissions throughout its supply chain. The telecom giant has successfully reduced its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 20% since 2020, a significant achievement given that Scope 3 emissions – generated by third-party suppliers – can constitute up to 80% of a company's total emissions. 
To combat this, T-Mobile has set a net-zero goal for all three emission scopes, setting an industry standard for sustainability. “We've implemented supplier screening, and leverage a third-party service to detect risks within the supply chain, not just on the environmental front but also on the social front,” Wilkerson shares.

Taking a forward-thinking approach

Under Wilkerson's leadership, T-Mobile is not resting on its laurels. The company is committed to continuous improvement in its sustainability practices, from increasing energy efficiency to enhancing supplier engagement. By working closely with its partners, T-Mobile aims to maintain transparency around Scope 3 emissions and inspire other companies to join in its green initiatives. “Looking forward, we’re going to have an impact on all our suppliers,” he says. This commitment to environmental stewardship, combined with a dedication to high-quality connectivity, proves T-Mobile’s role as a leader in both telecommunications and sustainability.
