Samsung SmartThings: 10 Years of Developing the Smart Home
Samsung SmartThings has been leading the way in ‘connected living’ for more than 10 years, having first been acquired by Samsung Electronics in 2014.
Designed to lead the way in connected living, Samsung SmartThings consistently seeks to redefine home automation as it sets the standard for efficiency and security. The product gives users the power to control devices in the home using their smartphone, offering the chance for people to streamline their routines with notifications personalised to their individual needs.
Likewise, SmartThings also has advanced automation features to make daily life more convenient. The company has partnered with organisations like Hive in September 2024 to provide customers with greater control over their home's temperature and keep their energy bills low ahead of the winter months.
What is Samsung SmartThings?
SmartThings Inc. is an American home automation company headquartered in California. First founded in 2012, it became a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics a decade ago in 2014. The company focuses on the development of automation software, cloud services and the Internet of Things (IoT) for smart homes.
With SmartThings, users can use their home appliances built-in WiFi with the Smart Control feature in the SmartThings app to monitor and control them using a smartphone - without having to move.
According to the organisation, the platform boasts 62 million active users which increased by 70% around 2019 and 2020.
Initially, Samsung SmartThings started as the IoT platform of Samsung Electronics to connect Samsung products, in addition to a wide array of devices from its partner companies. This integration of technology has since evolved into a more connected experience tailored to fit a broad range of consumer lifestyles.
As of August 2023, Samsung SmartThings subscribers have grown to more than 350 million, establishing Samsung as a leader in the smart home market. The platform only continues to expand its influence, particularly within the IoT industry, by seeking to enhance its AI capabilities to suit business needs as well.
Using IoT to unlock greater value
IoT has the capabilities to optimise services and provide greater insights to help people and organisations reduce emissions and waste.
As part of Samsung SmartThings’ partnership with Hive, users will be able to remotely control their thermostat from the smart home platform. The SmartThings app is now also able to automate connected appliances to reduce their electricity usage during peak hours.
Increasing access to energy consumption controls across a range of appliances is vital for many, particularly ahead of winter and rising utility bills in the UK alone.
“We know that controlling energy consumption is a top priority for our customers, and as we head into winter this becomes an even bigger priority,” comments Deborah Honig, Chief Customer Officer at Samsung UK and Ireland.
“We are continually evolving our SmartThings energy management features and extending our partnerships with British Gas and Tesla, to make it even easier and more intuitive for customers to manage their home energy usage.
“By providing new automated tech solutions that help our customers save time, money and energy, we are seeing even more people do that ‘little bit extra’ every day to take care of their home and the planet.”
