Mobile Magazine looks at some of the world’s leading content providers who are dominating the streaming industry as it continues to swell with demand

OTT, or over-the-top, content providers are services that allow users to stream content.

This type of media distribution method serves as an alternative to traditional satellite or cable television, which is distributing increasing levels of media every day.

These streaming services are apps or websites viewers use to access films, TV programmes and other Internet-enabled content. Accessibility has improved like never before, given the fact that these services are accessible on any device that has Internet enabled on it.

In the business world, the demand for streaming has spiked, as companies are now opting for these types of technologies to better serve their customers.

Mobile Magazine spotlights some of the top OTT content providers that are bringing content to viewers via the Internet.

10. Peacock

Launched: 2020

Peacock TV is a US OTT subscription service owned and operated by Comcast through its entertainment division NBCUniversal. First launching in 2020, the service primarily features series and film content from NBCUniversal studios and other third-party content providers that offer TV, news and sports programming.

As of January 2025, Peacock boasts 36 million paid subscribers. It has two subscription plans, Premium (with adverts) and Premium Plus (without adverts), whilst offering a collection of content that can be viewed via an on-demand library or always-on streaming channels.

9. Crunchyroll

Launched: 2006

Crunchyroll is an independently-operated joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex, designed to unite fans and creators around the world. The service offers a broad range of content and immersive experiences for viewers interested in anime and manga, offering a streaming service for animated TV shows, manga, drama, music and digital entertainment.

The service operates across more than 200 countries and territories and offers fans access to some of the most extensive collections of anime content. Simulcasts, shows available just after their broadcast in Japan, are also popular within the service.

8. YouTube TV

Launched: 2017

YouTube TV is a TV streaming service that includes live TV from more than 100 broadcast, cable and regional sports networks. It is operated by Google subsidiary YouTube and offers a selection of live linear channel feeds and on-demand content from TV networks such as ABC, NBC, CBS and more.

The service, which is aimed at cord cutters, is currently only exclusively available in the US. It can be streamed through its dedicated website and mobile app, smart TVs and digital media players.

7. Max (HBO Max)

Launched: 2018 (HBO Max)

Max, also known as HBO Max, is a subscription video on-demand OTT streaming service. It is a proprietary unit of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming & Games, which is itself a division of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). 

The platform offers content from the libraries of Warner Bros., Discovery, HBO, CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Animal Planet, TBS, TNT, Eurosport and their related brands.

Max first launched as the enhanced streaming service replacing HBO Max in 2020. The service now features the existing library of HBO content, in addition to a broader range of genres and highly-anticipated premieres. 

6. Prime Video

Launched: 2006

Amazon Prime Video, referred to as Prime Video, is a subscription video on-demand OTT streaming TV service owned by Amazon. Its main focus is to distribute films and TV series produced or co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios or licensed to Amazon as Amazon Originals.

The service also hosts content from other providers, content add-ons, live sporting events and video rental and purchasing services. Members can watch hundreds of TV shows and films on their preferred device.

Amazon also continually updates its services to cater to the unique preferences of its users around the world in a highly competitive OTT market.

5. ESPN+

Launched: 2018

ESPN+ is owned by ESPN Inc and is a subscription video streaming service that is a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and Hearst Communications who own a 80/20% stake respectively. 

The service is one of Disney’s three flagship subscription streaming brands in the US, alongside Disney+ and Hulu. It is marketed as an add-on to ESPN’s core linear networks with some of ESPN+’s content previously offered exclusively to cable subscribers via ESPN3 and the ESPN app.

Featured content on ESPN+ includes combat sports, college sports and original documentaries.

4. Hulu

Launched: 2007

Hulu is a leading premium streaming service that offers a vast range of live and on-demand entertainment content through its subscription options. 

Designed to give consumers greater control of their viewing experience, the on-demand offering provides access to shows from every major US broadcast network, a library of TV series and films and award-winning original content. 

Hulu is a subscription streaming media service owned by Disney Streaming, a subsidiary of the Disney Entertainment segment of the Walt Disney Company.

3. Disney+

Launched: 2019

Disney+ is the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic. 

As the flagship direct-to-consumer streaming service from Disney, Disney+ offers an ever-growing collection of exclusive originals, including feature-length films, documentaries, live-action and animated series and short-form content.

More broadly, as a leading entertainment company, Disney’s main areas of business include television, broadcasting, streaming media, theme park resorts, consumer products and publishing. It is one of the best-known companies in the world and was ranked 48 on the 2023 Fortune 500 list of biggest companies in the US by revenue.

The company has also won 135 Academy Awards, produced some of the greatest films of all time and totally revolutionised the theme park industry.

2. Apple TV+

Launched: 2019

Apple TV+ is a streaming service from technology giant Apple. It features exclusive Apple Original shows and movies from some of the industry's top talent, with new premieres each month on the platform.

The Apple TV app is able to personalise what viewers enjoy watching across their existing apps and services, whilst also developing a secure understanding of viewing interests. It offers suggestions for shows and movies from more than 150 streaming apps, including Amazon Prime and Hulu and pay-TV services.

Apple plans to further expand the service moving forward.

1. Netflix

Launched: 1997

Netflix has revolutionised the entertainment industry with its pioneering streaming media and video on demand services. Since its founding, the company has grown into a global powerhouse, offering a wide array of content to subscribers in almost 200 countries. With a robust infrastructure and a focus on customer experience, Netflix continues to redefine how audiences consume media.

As Netflix has continued to explode and achieve multi-billion-dollar revenues, its corporate setup has remained unique. While radical at the time, many companies now aspire to achieve the company’s successful culture of separating corporate culture from team relationships.
