Mobile Magazine hears from Intuit Mailchimp’s Head of EMEA, Jim Rudall, about how businesses can digitally enhance mobile technology
Mobile Magazine speaks with Jim Rudall, Head of EMEA at Intuit Mailchimp, about the power of AI and how the company seeks to bolster its customer offerings

As the mobile and telecommunications industries continue to digitally transform, artificial intelligence (AI) is being touted as a crucial strategy to unlock greater value for customers.

It is anticipated that AI will bring a range of benefits to the industry, including network optimisation, hyper-personalised services, network security, edge computing and energy efficiency.

With this in mind, we spoke with Intuit Mailchimp’s Head of EMEA, Jim Rudall, about how businesses can digitally enhance mobile technology. In this exclusive interview, he explains how Mailchimp itself uses cutting-edge technologies like generative AI (Gen AI) to improve mobile-first user experiences.

Tell us about yourself and your role at Mailchimp.

At 28, I founded my own company, growing it over five years until it was successfully acquired. I then spent a decade in the fast-paced, high-growth e-commerce and martech sectors, working with VC-backed companies, which ultimately led me to join the founding leadership team of Shopify in EMEA, where I built out the sales organisation.

"Mailchimp, over its 20-year journey, has grown to serve more than 50% of its customers outside the U.S., with a significant proportion in EMEA. However, historically, there were no go-to-market teams or leadership outside the U.S. to focus on the unique needs of local customers."

I was brought on board to build the EMEA business, enabling Intuit Mailchimp to better understand and serve customers across the diverse countries in this region. I currently lead go-to-market teams across London, Dublin, the Nordics, Spain, and Germany, and am excited to continue building and expanding as Intuit Mailchimp evolves to reflect the needs of these markets.

Tell us Mailchimp and the services it provides.

How is Mailchimp currently working to advance mobile technology?

We are dedicated to advancing mobile technology by adopting a “mobile-first” approach and integrating cutting-edge technologies such as optical character recognition (OCR), real-time updates, and voice recognition capabilities from Apple and Google platforms.

Tapping into these innovations ensures our products remain industry-leading. Additionally, we're working closely with our data science engineers to create smart and predictive enhancements to enable personalised experiences for our users.

And of course the potential for powerful Gen AI features is always top of mind as we constantly build upon and improve our mobile apps.

What challenges do you face and how do you manage them?

Mobile technology operates as its own ecosystem, requiring constant management of distinct tooling, build pipelines, and tech stacks. Additionally, the diversity of devices, operating systems, and platforms introduces complexities, including potential compatibility issues.

Another challenge is delivering a consistent user experience across both mobile and web applications, where scaling communication adds an extra layer of difficulty.

"To address these challenges, we have implemented rigorous testing and compatibility processes across mobile platforms. We collaborate closely with our engineering teams to continuously refine our tooling and build pipelines, streamlining our development efforts."

We are also investing heavily in research and development to tackle emerging compatibility issues between mobile and web environments.

What’s next in mobile technology for Mailchimp?

We are committed to staying at the forefront of mobile technology, and the rapid pace of innovation means the future always holds new possibilities. A key area of our focus is improving identity management to simplify login and sign-up processes across both web and mobile platforms.

"We have also made significant advancements in integrating Gen AI into our products and are dedicated to further innovation in this space."

Another priority is enhancing personalisation and convenience to create exceptional mobile experiences tailored to users’ specific needs, particularly when they are on the go. Additionally, we are focused on ensuring a seamless experience across the entire Mailchimp and Intuit ecosystem of applications.

We are excited about the future of mobile technology at Mailchimp and the growth it can unlock for our customers. Our commitment to exploring emerging technologies is shaping cutting-edge solutions that continuously elevate customer expectations.
