A Very Mobile Magazine Christmas - June 2024
Samsung's vision for the future of mobile AI involves hybrid integration and collaborative innovation, says Won-joon Choi, Head of Mobile at Samsung.
Samsung introduced Galaxy AI features on its S24 series, Samsung’s first AI phone. To bring the benefits of Gen AI to the Galaxy S24 series Samsung took a hybrid approach to its AI integration.
“AI offers so many possibilities and we believe mobile devices are the primary access point for unlocking its potential as users around the globe continue to rely on their phones for most of their day-to-day needs,” said Won-joon.
Samsung believes a hybrid approach is both a practical and reliable solution to meet consumer needs. It provides users with a balance of the instant responsiveness and privacy assurance of on-device AI, as well as the versatility of cloud-based AI, owing to open collaborations with industry partners.
Won-joon expects that more mobile AI features will be incorporated inside mobile devices as the intelligent computing power of the latest chips – such as NPUs – advance, which will allow more people to embrace AI.
“This exciting news is all part of the extension of our commitment to Galaxy AI and entering the next phase of the mobile AI era,” he explained. “The introduction of Galaxy AI on Galaxy S24 series was only the start. To deliver a completely new and unique AI experience, we will further optimise the Galaxy AI experience for the upcoming foldable devices.
“Our foldables are the most versatile and flexible form factor in Samsung Galaxy and when combined with Galaxy AI, these two complementary technologies will together unlock all new possibilities.”
In addition to this, Samsung is keen to expand Galaxy AI experiences across the broader Galaxy ecosystem.
“As the mobile AI era moves forward at a rapid pace, Samsung is accelerating mobile AI innovations to meet the needs of not only today, but tomorrow,” Won-joon added.
Apple: iOS 18 makes iPhone more Secure, Personal & Private
Apple previewed iOS 18 earlier in the year, its much-anticipated release that offered more customisation options, a redesign of the Photos app, new ways to manage the Mail inbox and messaging over satellite.
The new Home Screen will allow users to arrange apps and widgets and customise the buttons at the bottom of the Lock Screen and exciting new text effects arrive on iMessage.
iOS 18 is supported by the same technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, except that users can now communicate over satellite in the Messages app when a cellular or Wi-Fi connection isn’t available.
Also introduced on iOS 18 was ChatGPT, which is integrated into Siri and system wide Writing Tools on Apple’s range of platforms. This will let users access ChatGPT’s expertise, without jumping from one tool to another.
The personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad and Mac is Apple Intelligence, which combines the power of generative models with personal context, to provide intelligence that’s both useful and relevant.
“It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customisation and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages. There are so many benefits for everyone,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering.
