Advanced APIs will create better customer experiences and open new revenue streams
Ericsson and other telecom giants launch a new company Aduna to standardise network APIs globally, announcing the appointment of Anthony Bartolo as its CEO

Former Vonage and Bandwidth executive has been touted to lead a new telecommunications API company, which has the backing of global telco giants Ericsson, Vodafone, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom, among others.

Anthony Bartolo has been appointed CEO of Aduna to lead the new venture, which will focus on standardising network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) across telecommunications providers globally.

First launched in September 2024, Aduna will develop and commercialise these standardised network APIs. APIs enable software developers to integrate telecommunications network capabilities into their applications, with Aduna selling the APIs through developer platforms.

Aduna represents a shift in how telecommunications providers approach developer integration. By creating a unified platform for network APIs, carriers aim to accelerate the development of new telecommunications-enabled applications and services.

Anthony Bartolo: A broadband veteran

Bartolo joins Aduna from Vonage, a cloud communications platform provider, where he served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer. He previously held the same role at Bandwidth, a communications platform as a service company that provides voice, messaging and emergency services APIs to enterprises.

With more than three-decades of experience in telecommunications, Anthony has also helped lead a transition to a software-as-a-service model at Avaya as Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer. This move resulted in the company’s annual recurring revenue increasing dramatically.

Anthony has a wealth of knowledge in this field, having held an executive position at Tata Communications, where he served as President of Mobility and Chief Product Officer. Here, he led market expansion and established strategic partnerships across multiple regions.

At Aduna, Anthony will commence his role on 20th January 2025, subject to regulatory approvals.

“Aduna is at the forefront of the next technology wave. Providing developers with ubiquitous access to open, programmable network functionality through common APIs will empower them to innovate at global hyperscale and drive value creation for enterprises, their customers and the telecom industry,” Anthony shares.

“These new and more advanced applications will create better customer experiences, open new revenue streams, work seamlessly anywhere in the world, and provide businesses with innovative and differentiating ways to operate. I am honored to lead Aduna towards a new frontier for the future of technology, communication and the telecom industry.”

Standardising APIs

The standardisation of network APIs aims to simplify application development across different telecommunications networks.

This would allow developers to create applications that can access network capabilities such as quality of service controls, location services and identity verification through a single interface, rather than integrating with each carrier separately.

Network APIs can also provide developers with access to core telecommunications network functions. These capabilities include network quality management, user authentication and location-based services.

Niklas Heuveldop, Head of Business Area Global Communications Platform at Ericsson

Through standardisation, Aduna is designed to reduce the complexity of building applications that work across multiple carrier networks.

“Anthony is a recognised global technology leader with a proven track record in driving successful strategy execution in fast-moving businesses. His unique cross-industry expertise across the technology, operational and business domains positions him exceptionally well to deliver on Aduna's vision,” comments Niklas Heuveldop, Head of Business Area Global Communications Platform at Ericsson.

“We are excited about Anthony now stepping in to further accelerate the onboarding of developer platform partners, enabling millions of developers to access advanced network capabilities and drive the next wave of services innovation via common APIs across industry-leading partner networks worldwide.”
