Singtel & Ericsson: Streamlining Telco NaaS to Advance 5G

The priority for Singtel and Ericsson is to streamline services for customers
Singtel and Ericsson prioritise Network-as-a-Service (NaaS), partnering to bolster opportunities for telcos to improve 5G services for enterprise customers

As disruptive technologies continue to influence the global telecommunications landscape, the industry is seeking to connect people around the world even further with the power of networks like 5G.

WIth this in mind, leading telcos Ericsson and Singtel have signed an agreement to enable service providers to modernise and simplify the creation and management of new networks. This will take place through Singtel’s Paragon platform for telcos and enterprises, alongside Ericsson’s Service Orchestration and Assurance platform.

The priority of both companies is streamlining services for customers, with their combined solution working to connect the two components via API to orchestrate complex telco networks.

About the partnership

Both Ericsson and Singtel have been partnering for a number of years on a range of initiatives designed to improve the global telco networking space.

The latest memorandum of understanding (MoU) is to offer a self-service, API-enabled, zero-touch and real-time solution for ordering, provisioning and assuring communications services. This is via Singtel’s award-winning all-in-one orchestration platform for 5G edge computing and cloud services, Paragon and Ericsson’s Service Orchestration and Assurance.

"Breaking through challenges experienced by enterprises and CSPs alike when it comes to the creation and adoption of new and valuable 5G-enabled services is a clear priority in the global telecoms market today."

Mats Karlsson, Head of Solution Area Business and Operations Support Systems, Ericsson

Communication Service Providers (CSPs) globally will now be able to use the cloud-native solution to modernise and simplify ways to provision new wireless communications services like network slicing and service assurance for enterprise customers, which could in turn lead to new monetisation opportunities for telcos.

The reason both companies are prioritising this task is because manual provisioning of network services by CSPs is often the norm, with self-service options seen as too complex or costly to develop.

Paragon platform:
  • API catalogue for enterprise customers to order/manage dedicated 5G services
  • Management of connectivity lifecycle and quality of service
  • Analytics on consumption and performance of connections
  • Autopilot engine to automate management of connectivity consumption

As a result, the combined solution can enable enterprise customers to order and manage their own communications services through Singtel’s Paragon platform in a low-friction environment. Requests are immediately executed in the network via Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance.

The solution will also be automated to ensure it supports a range of use cases and network changes. In addition, it should be able to fit a wide range of use cases and network changes, CSP networks and hybrid or multi-vendor environments.

Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance:
  • Manage the provisioning of network profiles and subscriptions
  • Life-cycle management of network slices
  • Reporting of assurance metrics to demonstrate service performance

“We see in this collaboration with Singtel the potential for greatly increased interest, uptake and profitability of 5G services for enterprises,” comments Mats Karlsson, Head of Solution Area Business and Operations Support Systems at Ericsson.

“Singtel’s innovative, multi-faceted Paragon platform and Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance are complementary components that, together, offer the perfect combination in answer to many of the adoption challenges we see holding enterprises and CSPs back, and we look forward to working with the ecosystem and early adopters to perfect the ideas and capabilities represented in the MoU.”

Cloud-native network solutions

Cloud-based technology is becoming increasingly popular for telcos. Some of the advantages it offers the industry is higher speed, greater efficiency and flexibility, in addition to less time-to-market. As a result, there is arguably greater scope for innovation.

In order to stay competitive, telco operators are often advised now to have a cloud migration strategy to improve overall business operations.

“Singtel’s Paragon platform has enabled transformation for many telcos and put them in a lead position in their markets, to roll out next-generation enterprise applications and services,” says Manoj Prasanna Kumar, Chief Technology Officer at Singtel Digital InfraCo.

“We are glad to have the strong support of many technology partners and now a global network leader Ericsson in the Paragon ecosystem. This strategic partnership between Ericsson and Singtel bringing together Singtel’s Paragon platform and Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance, will strengthen the joint value proposition and make it easier and faster for Telcos to roll out their 5G, edge and network API use cases.”
