Paris Olympics adds to UK Tourism & more EE Network Users
The Paris Olympics is an excellent opportunity for tourism - from the Catacombs to the five Statues of Liberty to the Paris Sewer Museum (although, perhaps not in the summer). But with the ‘City of Lights’ being in the middle of western Europe, many Olympic tourists are visiting other destinations on their journey to the continent.
According to EE, an influx of international visitors to London is generating £10m (US$12m) for the UK economy. With the typical British weather being replaced by clear skies and the blazing sun, many tourists are opting to watch the games from one of the many free screenings in the city, while posting a selfie or calling home on EE.
EE enhances London mobile coverage with over 500 small cells for improved street-level connectivity
Analysis of the EE mobile network shows the number of international visitors in central London has grown by 13% in the last week, with 100,000 tourists basing themselves in the UK and exploring its capital city, compared to the same week in previous years.
- Mexico (137%)
- China (125%)
- South Korea (47%)
- India (37%)
- Japan (37%)
EE’s mobile network is now reliably connecting more people, as its 4G and 5G coverage covers over 80 stations and tunnels on Transport for London’s (TfL) Underground network, in addition to popular tourist destinations like Covent Garden, Oxford Circus, Bond Street and Camden Town getting enhanced mobile connectivity.
EE has also added over 500 small cells throughout the city, to give existing street furniture like phone boxes, lampposts, CCTV columns and BT’s Digital Street Hubs better street-level mobile coverage.
This helps EE network users to book tickets and research restaurants with ease, as well as ensuring users can share their experiences on social media.
“There is a reason why it is called the ‘greatest show on Earth’ and that’s because the Olympic and Paralympic Games have true global appeal. With London’s proximity to Paris, we’re seeing more visitors from long-haul destinations relying on our network when they head to the UK this summer,” said Greg McCall, Chief Networks Officer at BT Group. “To effectively manage major influxes of tourists at peak times, we have enhanced our EE mobile connectivity with additional 4G and 5G capacity in key locations across London, including Underground stations. This is helping all visitors to the UK stay connected while they experience everything our great capital city has to offer.”
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to amplify Paris 2024 Olympics
Meanwhile in Paris, Samsung has updated the Paris 2024 viewer experience, with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Samsung Electronics became a Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner in 1997 and has since provided technology for the games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) both welcomed the news. This development comes shortly after the Samsung Galaxy S24 AI Experience won the ‘Disruptive Device Innovation Award in Asia’, at the 2024 Asia Mobile Awards, at the 2024 MWC Shanghai, led by the GSMA.
EE enhances 4G coverage in rural areas
From the Olympics to the countryside, EE is making waves. Over the past five years, EE has built over 300 new rural mobile sites and upgraded over 1,500 more across the UK, helping it to meet its 4G coverage obligations.
This includes new 4G masts placed to support the growing needs of Britain’s rural communities while having minimal impact on the natural environment. This helps to transform the lives of local people, while also enabling EE to hit its legally binding coverage commitments under the Shared Rural Network (SRN) and deliver 4G coverage to more than 50 isolated communities as part of the Scottish 4G Infill (S4GI) project.
