Entuity will be a core part of NOS's OSS architecture
Portuguese telco NOS partners with Park Place Technologies to strengthen infrastructure monitoring, as carriers invest in network transformation tools

NOS, Portugal's largest telecommunications and media group, has deployed network monitoring software from Park Place Technologies, a US-based IT infrastructure services provider, to strengthen its operational capabilities.

The implementation comes as European telecommunications carriers increase their investment in network monitoring tools to manage the complexity of hybrid cloud architectures and 5G infrastructure.

In particular, software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualisation (NFV) have created new requirements for operational visibility.

NOS, which operates fixed-line, mobile, and pay-TV services for 11 million subscribers across Portugal, will use Entuity's automated discovery and configuration management features to monitor its multi-vendor network environment.

The software also provides real-time topology mapping and performance analytics across physical and virtual infrastructure.

The rise of network monitoring deployment

The Entuity platform, which uses Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to collect data from network devices, will integrate with NOS's existing operational support systems (OSS) architecture. This integration enables automated inventory management and performance monitoring across the carrier's nationwide infrastructure.

With Entuity, NOS will benefit from:
  • Continuous network discovery will enhance control over B2B customer networks
  • The software offers comprehensive visibility, allowing NOS to examine individual devices and ports to identify service and network incidents
  • An advanced event management system will prioritise network alerts, enabling focus on critical issues
  • The software provides detailed analysis of network flow, including communication between source and destination ports

The deployment reflects growing pressure on European telecommunications providers to maintain service quality while managing increasingly complex network environments. These challenges have intensified with the rollout of 5G services and the adoption of cloud-native network functions.

"Entuity will be a core part of our OSS architecture and supporting operations to deliver on NOS's mission of providing to companies and institutions in Portugal the best solutions and services to their businesses and delivering the best experience," explains Paulo Bessa, Head of Development at NOS Business Solutions.

Strategic network monitoring investments

The deployment forms part of NOS's strategy to maintain service quality standards across its expanding network infrastructure. Paulo emphasises this point: "A reliable quality of service isn't just a benefit of what NOS delivers to their customers – it's the very essence of our service and goal."

Network monitoring tools have become essential for telecommunications providers as they manage increasingly complex infrastructure environments. The Entuity implementation will enable NOS to monitor both legacy systems and new technology deployments through a single platform.

The software's discovery engine creates scheduled snapshots of NOS's device inventory, enabling the carrier to track changes in network topology over time without manual intervention. This capability has grown in importance as telecommunications providers manage hybrid environments spanning traditional hardware and cloud-based infrastructure.

The platform also supports monitoring of thousands of devices from hundreds of equipment vendors through its SNMP compatibility. This multi-vendor support allows NOS to maintain visibility across its heterogeneous network environment comprising different generations of fixed and mobile infrastructure.

Automation drives operational improvements

The implementation includes automated configuration management capabilities, which reduce the manual effort required to maintain network inventory records. This automation extends to performance monitoring, with the platform collecting and analysing metrics across NOS's network infrastructure.

These automated capabilities align with broader industry trends, as telecommunications providers seek to reduce operational costs while managing more complex network environments. The software's scalability will support NOS's network expansion plans without requiring significant additional operational resources.

The deployment also includes tools for network capacity planning and performance optimization, enabling NOS to identify potential bottlenecks before they impact service delivery. This proactive approach to network management has become critical as carriers face increasing bandwidth demands from both consumer and enterprise customers.

The Entuity platform's architecture enables NOS to expand its monitoring capabilities as its network infrastructure grows. This scalability extends to both the number of devices monitored and the types of metrics collected, supporting the carrier's evolution toward more automated network operations.

President, Solutions Delivery at Park Place Technologies, David Cramer

Ensuring support for emerging network technologies is vital, with NOS maintaining operational visibility as it introduces new services and infrastructure. Such a forward-looking approach aligns with industry expectations of continued network evolution and increasing operational complexity.

David Cramer, President of Solutions Delivery at Park Place Technologies, says: "NOS can expect improved network stability, enhanced network security and a lower cost of ownership. Plus, Entuity is highly scalable and built to handle NOS' future needs."
