This Week’s Top 5 Stories in the Telco Sector

BT Group, the UK’s largest telecommunications provider, processes 2,000 signals of potential cyber attacks every second, equivalent to 200 million daily threats.
Such a stark revelation comes as AI continues to create new security vulnerabilities for organisations around the world.
Tris Morgan, Managing Director of Security at BT, explains that such a large scale of threats means cybersecurity skills will become essential for businesses in 2025.
"There is an existing stereotype that cybersecurity is too hard to understand. But you don't need to be born a cybernaut to understand it, or even master it," he says.
The warning comes as cybercriminals develop increasingly sophisticated tactics, including AI-driven phishing attacks – fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information by disguising as trustworthy entities – and malware, software specifically designed to disrupt computer systems.
Leading mobile operators Three UK and Virgin Media O2 have announced a partnership with cloud communications platform Sinch to make RCS Business Messaging (RBM) available on iOS for their customers.
Sinch, which is pioneering the way the world communicates through its digital Customer Communications Cloud announces that RCS Business Messaging (RBM) is now available on iOS for Three UK and Virgin Media O2 (VMO2).
Now available on Apple devices like iPhones and iPads, RBM was previously only available to Android based phones and devices.
The announcement comes shortly after Three UK introduced support for regular Rich Communications Services (RCS) to coincide with the iOS 18.2 update from Apple.
In a world-first achievement, leading telco Vodafone has made a world-first space video call from an area with no mobile phone coverage.
The call was made using a standard mobile phone with 4G/5G capabilities and commercial satellites that were built to offer a full mobile broadband experience. Vodafone says this is the only satellite technology of its kind and will enable multiple users in areas of no mobile coverage to make and receive video calls across the Internet, in addition to using online messaging services.
Vodafone is hopeful this achievement will pave the way for universal digital connectivity and close gaps in mobile phone coverage.
Company CEO Margherita Della Valle said: “Vodafone’s job is to get everyone connected, no matter where they are. Our advanced European 5G network will now be complemented with cutting-edge satellite technology.
“We are bringing customers the best network and connecting people who have never had access to mobile communications before.”
Leading telco Nokia has reported stronger than expected fourth-quarter adjusted operating profit and sales.
Towards the end of 2024, the company experienced a sharp increase in demand for its telecoms infrastructure from mobile operators worldwide. It has reported that its quarterly net sales rose 10% to €5.98 billion (US$6.2bn), which beat estimations from analysts.
The company has attributed part of this dramatic growth to its work in the networking sector, where it will continue to expand its presence in the market in Q4.
“Looking further ahead into 2025, we expect the improved trends we have seen in Network Infrastructure in the second half of this year, to sustain and drive strong growth,” shares Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia.
