Starlink’s satellite technology to expand Telecom Fiji's connectivity services with high-speed internet, cloud solutions & connectivity

Starlink, SpaceX's satellite Internet service, has entered into an agreement with Telecom Fiji for its advanced satellite network. Telecom Fiji will now be able to expand its services and offer high-speed internet access to customers across the Pacific island, from businesses to rural communities, schools and hospitals to the government itself.

It's been a busy month for Starlink, after launching its high-speed, low-latency Internet service in Madagascar. South Sudan’s National Communications Authority has also just granted Starlink a licence to operate in the North-African country.

Telecom Fiji brings Starlink satellite service to Fiji

Starlink is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SpaceX, which currently has 6,219 Starlink satellites in orbit (of which 6,146 are working). There are plans to have 10,000 in the future, orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 550 km, over 65 times closer than traditional geostationary orbital satellite operators. Due to this distance, Starlink can achieve significantly lower latencies and higher transmission speeds for its end users.

Telecom Fiji offers communication and networking services in Fiji, offering a range of mobile and landline options for customers, with voice or data.

As a Starlink reseller, Telecom Fiji will now be able to offer connectivity packages which can enable businesses to onboard a range of cloud-driven ICT solutions, such as:

  • Unified communications for streamlining communication channels
  • Endpoint security to protect devices and networks from cyber threats
  • Productivity applications to advance employee productivity with new software solutions
  • Backup and recovery to safeguard critical business data against loss or corruption
  • Managed Wi-Fi to ensure secure wireless internet connectivity
  • Network security solutions.

Through Starlink’s advanced satellite technology, Telecom Fiji is well-positioned to provide high-speed internet solutions for businesses and communities across Fiji, bringing the country into the digital age. Fiji’s businesses will benefit from Starlink’s satellite backhaul technology, such as ensuring uninterrupted operations with mission-critical backup links, seamless integration with cloud-based applications and services to enhance cloud readiness, in addition to efficient communications and productivity within and outside the organisation through advanced business communication technologies.

Telecom Fiji and Starlink to close digital divide

With the announcement of the new agreement, Charles Goundar, CEO of Telecom Fiji, said that working with Starlink was a significant milestone for the company and that this technology would help to close the digital divide.

“This collaboration allows us to bring advanced satellite technology to the most remote parts of Fiji, ensuring that every business and community can thrive in the digital age. Starlink service will complement our other product capability allowing us to offer innovative business solutions,” he shared. “We will be announcing our attractive and flexible product offerings shortly for small to large businesses, and customers will be able to order conveniently through our online portal.”

In addition to the Starlink kit, Telecom Fiji customers will be able to choose from various other service options such as:

  • Managed firewall for tighter cybersecurity
  • Cloud applications
  • Backup and storage at Telecom’s datacenter, amongst other services.

“The other convenient factor is that for existing Telecom customers, the monthly charges will be incorporated into their bill,” added Charles. “We request customers to follow our social media pages for these upcoming updates.”
