Leading telco Verizon has partnered with manufacturer Honeywell to develop an integrated technology solution for retail and logistics firms.

The partnership will combine Verizon's 5G mobile network technology - which uses high-frequency radio waves to transmit data at speeds up to 20 times faster than 4G networks - with Honeywell's enterprise mobility hardware and software systems.

“Companies of all sizes are looking at ways to reduce the time and effort it takes to make key technology purchases so they can get their operations up and running promptly,” says Massimo Peselli, Chief Revenue Officer for Global Enterprise and Public Sector at Verizon Business.

“By offering a fully-managed services solution at a single monthly price with Honeywell, our retail and logistics customers can focus more on their return on investment and driving business outcomes.”

Addressing technology complexity

Central to the partnership is a redundant connectivity system that maintains point-of-sale operations during fixed-line internet outages.

The package incorporates Verizon's 5G cellular data plans alongside Honeywell's handheld scanning devices and Smart Pay contactless payment software - a system that enables customers to make purchases using near-field communication technology.

It also aims to address the complexity of procurement by providing a single point of contact for hardware, connectivity and support services. This represents a shift from traditional models where retailers contract separately with hardware vendors, software providers and telecommunications companies.

The platform offers a host of benefits aimed at improving operational efficiency, scalability and overall business performance, including:
  • Simplified procurement
  • Enhanced connectivity
  • Comprehensive device management
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Scalability

The platform is able to harness Verizon's 5G network infrastructure to handle data transmission for inventory management and payment processing. This marks an expansion of 5G technology beyond consumer mobile services into enterprise applications.

Likewise, Honeywell's Enterprise Mobility Services division provides device lifecycle management, covering configuration, deployment and technical support. The system operates through handheld devices that connect to Verizon's 5G network for inventory tracking and payment processing.

The service operates on a monthly subscription model - a solution that could address budget constraints for retailers who face periodic technology refresh cycles.

Streamlining the supply chain

Such a comprehensive solution is designed to target operational efficiency through integrated workflow systems. Retailers can manage inventory, process transactions, and maintain connectivity through a single platform, reducing the need for multiple system interfaces.

The system's scalability also accommodates both small retailers and large logistics operations. Verizon's 5G network provides the bandwidth necessary for real-time inventory updates and transaction processing across multiple locations.

Honeywell's device management system includes spare pool management and frontline help desk support, ensuring continuous operation of mobile devices used for inventory and payment processing.

All things considered, the partnership focuses on improving business resiliency in procurement operations. The integration of Verizon's network with Honeywell's hardware creates redundancy in critical systems, maintaining operations during network disruptions.

It is also designed to benefit supply chain operations with the high-speed connectivity of 5G networks, as it can enable real-time tracking and updates across the logistics network.

It can also support both inventory management and customer-facing operations through a unified platform.

David Barker, President of Honeywell Productivity Solutions and Services

“Our collaboration with Verizon will help retailers and logistics companies maintain an effective resiliency plan for unexpected disruptions,” explains David Barker, President of Honeywell Productivity Solutions and Services.

“By bundling services, we are reducing the number of parties involved and steps it takes to purchase a full solution that often requires several key technologies, enabling businesses to stay up-to-date with important technology refreshes and avoiding difficult CAPEX budgeting cycles.”
