The companies highlighted here have helped businesses realise the potential of 5G in 2024
To conclude 2024, we look at some of the largest stories within the telco sector. From VodafoneZiggo, to Virgin Media O2, here is our look at May…
Stephen van Rooyen, CEO at VodafoneZiggo

Stephen assumed his new role as CEO of VodafoneZiggo in September 2024, after a career at Sky spanning 18 years.

He worked his way up through the ranks of senior leadership before taking the top jobs of EVP & CEO of UK & Europe and CEO of UK & Ireland & Group Chief Commercial Officer in 2016 and 2023 respectively. He then took a break from Sky earlier in 2024 before assuming his new position at VodafoneZiggo.

His career at Sky stretched across a number of geographies outside of the UK and Ireland, namely Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland.

“Having held senior commercial and leadership roles at Sky, Stephen brings considerable expertise of both the telecoms and media sectors in Europe,” Vodafone Group Chief Executive Margherita Della Valle said. “We wish him every success.”

Stephen’s new position will take him to Utretch in the Netherlands. He said of his new position: “I am incredibly excited to join the VodafoneZiggo family. Having been based in London for many years, I look forward to a new experience, for both me and my family, living and working in the Netherlands.”

Before joining Sky in 2006, Stephen worked for a number of other big telco names and large entities from other industries, including Virgin Media and Nokia, as well as BGL Group, Accenture, News UK and Johnston Press, as well as acting as Chairman of Skills & Productivity Board for the UK Government's Department for education.

Virgin Media O2 & Accenture Harness Mobile Private Network

Virgin Media O2 remains a leader in telco business

Virgin Media O2 and Accenture shared the news of a new collaboration to utilise opportunities across the UK’s growing mobile private network market, which by 2023 is estimated to reach £528m (US$660m). Virgin Media O2’s 5G private network capabilities for UK businesses will be augmented by Accenture, which will help enterprises realise the potential of 5G.

The collaboration was designed to enable a broad set of applications for industry segments, such as computer vision AI for product quality control monitoring of equipment and queue management systems for more enjoyable customer experiences.

Building on Virgin Media O2’s established expertise in deploying mobile private networks, Jo Bertram, Managing Director of Business and Wholesale at Virgin Media O2, said that this new partnership with Accenture leverages their industry-specific knowledge and proven digital platform and solutions, to help broaden Virgin Media O2’s offering to businesses.

“From facilitating safe communication on construction sites to powering critical devices in hospitals, businesses across a range of sectors will have access to a one-stop shop of innovative, adaptive and secure mobile private network solutions,” Jo says.

“Enterprises need to reinvent their networks to become agile and competitive, and it starts with access to reliable and secure mobile connectivity,” added Andy Tay, Global Lead at Accenture Cloud First.

“This enables companies to build a strong digital core that uses the power of cloud, data, AI and other technologies alongside new ways of working – ultimately helping them to optimise operations, drive growth, and reach new levels of performance.”
