An expert in security solutions, Darren Anstee leverages his 25 years of experience to help Netscout business customers tackle cyber risks and threats

Widely recognised for his intimate knowledge of cybersecurity, Darren Anstee is a trailblazer in network security solutions and devising strategies to keep systems safe. With more than 25 years of experience, he often contributes to both technical and business publications and speaks before industry organisations to share his insights.

Darren is ultimately focused on helping network operators, whether they are enterprise-level or service provider, to manage the risks they face. This is particularly relevant as we move into 2025, where the business threat landscape has never been more critical.
As business needs evolve, Darren is able to provide his understanding of internet service providers (ISPs) and businesses can utilise new networking and security technologies and combine them as enablers in the achievement of core business goals.

Adopting new security technologies

After graduating from the University of Southampton with a degree in Computer Science, Darren was a systems engineer for many years. Significantly, he worked with Arbor Networks for more than 14 years before the company was acquired by 2015 by Netscout. He spent 12 years working with Arbor Networks in a variety of leadership roles, which included stints in consulting engineering and solutions architecture.

“My background has very much been in looking at network traffic, understanding threats and helping our customers to defend themselves against those threats,” Darren told Mobile Magazine at MWC Barcelona 2024.

Darren’s role at Arbor Networks was an instrumental one as he helped elevate the profile of the company significantly, positioning it as a thought leader in the network threat detection and visibility sectors. For both service providers and enterprises, his role as Solutions Architect was to build out teams across North America and APAC. This ultimately gave him a fuller understanding of the different security challenges faced by Netscout customers around the world.

Once the acquisition took place, Darren served as Netscout’s Chief Security Technologist. Here, his main focus was to ensure the company’s security strategy provides customers with solutions for future network visibility and security issues.

Darren now works closely with the ATLAS Security Engineering and Response Team (ASERT), sales and engineering and his peers within the wider Netscout business to ensure that its customers are remaining protected from emerging threats.

“Since the acquisition, we've been evolving the Arbor portfolio with new products and new capabilities, but also bringing in technology from the broader Netscout engineering environment,” he says. “We have integrated our engineering, our product management and our tool sets, and what we've been doing is looking at how we can take one plus one and deliver three.”

Confronting a changing cyber threat landscape

With Darren’s expertise and vision, Netscout fast-became a figurehead company that recognises the potentially catastrophic impact of cyberattacks on a business.

Notably, in November 2024, the company announced its partnership with Internet carrier Arelion to strengthen Arelion’s Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack mitigation capabilities. By enhancing its capabilities with Netscout, Arelion is able to improve network security across its #1 ranked global Internet backbone, empowering enterprise customers with resilient, high-performance connectivity services.

“Financial services, government, utilities and other vital sectors are experiencing increased risk from more sophisticated and frequent DDoS attacks, reinforcing the need for comprehensive DDoS protection,” Darren said about the announcement. “Our latest DDoS Threat Intelligence Report echoes Arelion’s experience of increasing numbers of application-layer and volumetric attacks, as well as greater attack sophistication. This partnership will help Arelion enhance the protection they can provide to enterprises facing more frequent cyberattacks on their businesses.”

Partnerships like these are coming at the perfect time within the networking landscape, as geopolitical tensions are ongoing. As fixed wireless access is rolling out faster than ever before in many parts of the world, it is becoming paramount for businesses to protect themselves and their customers from rising threats.

Darren is prepared to help Netscout meet these challenges head on.

“I don't think there's any doubt that, especially in the DDoS space, we will continue to see more activity, particularly with IoT devices and customer premises equipment (CPE) remaining vulnerable,” Darren explains to Mobile Magazine. “Our customers need to protect themselves and their customers from the threats they face, in the most effective way possible. We are all reliant on the Internet. Netscout prides itself on protecting the performance and availability of the Internet services we rely upon.”
