T-Mobile in 5G First with PGA Championship
T-Mobile aims to deploy 5G solutions at the PGA Championship, to enhance the PGA Championship fan experience for viewers at home, as well as those watching at the Valhalla Golf Club.
The PGA Championship is an annual golf championship, the final men's major of the golf season, led by the Professional Golfers' Association of America.
T-Mobile's role in shaping the 5G era
T-Mobile is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG which offers wireless telecommunications services, as well as voice calls, text messaging, video calling and data communications to customers. The service is consistently ranked first for customer care among mobile network operators, which is why we included T-Mobile in our Top 10: Leading Global Telecommunication Operators.
T-Mobile works with partners such as Dell, with this partnership seeing T-Mobile developing solutions that make it easier for enterprise and government customers to embrace the 5G era in collaboration with Dell’s edge computing technologies — providing superfast speeds, ultra-low latency, and control they need to use new applications that can help to increase revenue and lower costs.
In addition, T-Mobile has partnered with Prisms of Reality to support new education opportunities in schools by using 5G and virtual reality. This works by empowering students through a new VR learning platform where students can experience real-life stories to improve their mathematics. T-Mobile’s aim is to ultimately close the opportunity gap in STEM learning worldwide.
The benefits of 5G
5G utilises technologies such as automation, AI and IoT. In mobile technology, 5G offers several advancements, such as faster download and upload speeds and smoother streaming. 5G networks also aim to minimise latency, which is vital for real-time applications like augmented reality and virtual reality.
T-Mobile is broadening the experience for spectators with the 5G network and will offer fans:
- For the first time in golfing history, 5G will be embedded in a live broadcast, using the T-Mobile 5G private network. CBS Sports will use 5G-connected cameras for new angles of the iconic Hole 13.
- Fans can watch fresh pre-championship coverage live on PGA digital and various social channels.
- T-Mobile’s 5G private network and 5G POV cameras will give viewers an up-close look at the action on the practice range. PGA coaches as well as expert commentators will offer their valuable insights on the players’ warm-up sessions.
- Fans receive detailed stats, such as ball speed, apex, curve and distance.
T-Mobile and PGA of America revolutionise golf with 5G technology
Jeff Price, Chief Commercial Officer of the PGA of America, shared that he was thrilled to introduce groundbreaking technology to one of golf’s most significant events through this partnership with T-Mobile.
“T-Mobile has paved the way for unprecedented innovation that will continue to thrill our fans. And this is just the beginning,” he said.
"Sports organisations typically come to T-Mobile to see if 5G can help them enhance operations, the fan experience, or the event broadcast, and we’re delivering all of the above and more at the PGA Championship," adds Callie Field, President, T-Mobile Business Group. "5G firsts are always exciting, but it’s so rewarding to see how our T-Mobile for Business solutions are making a tangible difference — from making it easier for producers to capture and create amazing new broadcast moments to helping fans experience even more action.”
