Private 5G infrastructure is designed to support Brownsville’s immediate need for seamless connectivity
Both Nokia and NTT Data have committed to expand their global Private 5G partnership with a new deployment in Texas to accelerate smart city transformation

Private 5G network connectivity is being designed to revolutionise public safety, operational scalability and business-critical processes. The end result is transforming cities into smart and safe environments that are digitally transformed.

With this in mind, leading telecommunications company Nokia has announced a global go-to-market partnership with leading IT services leader NTT Data to advance Private 5G transformation. This will take place in key sectors such as airports and smart cities and aims to address growing demands for reliable and modern connectivity solutions for critical business.

The first deployment in North America is designed to be an enterprise-ready carrier-grade Private 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) for the city of Brownsville, Texas. This marks a key milestone for the partnership, as the city leverages Nokia’s leading 5G RAN and NTT Data’s globally available Private 5G network-as-a-service platform.

It is the hope that these solutions will deliver a comprehensive solution that delivers reliable, high-bandwidth and low latency wireless capabilities for business mission-critical environments.

Improving community connectivity

This collaboration between both companies hopes to lay the foundation for more connected and efficient urban environments around the world. In addition, a successful delivery of Private 5G ensures greater support for digital transformation initiatives.

NTT Data already boasts a strong partner ecosystem for successfully developing, implementing and managing applications, infrastructure and connectivity solutions. This, alongside Nokia’s ‘anyRAN for Enterprise’ approach, aims to offer greater choice and flexibility for businesses - whilst accelerating and simplifying the adoption of Private 5G.

“We’re seeing an unprecedented demand for flexible, high-performance private networks. With NTT DATA’s globally available Private 5G platform, we’re uniquely positioned to deliver solutions that meet the needs of today’s industries while ensuring long-term operational resilience. Our partnership with Nokia’s Private 5G RAN allows us to bring our combined strengths to airports, cities, and beyond - delivering scalable, secure, and high-speed connectivity that accelerates digital transformation.”

Private 5G infrastructure is designed to support Brownsville’s immediate need for seamless connectivity to manage and operate applications for increased public safety, operational efficiency and sustainability.

Likewise, this type of network enables greater flexibility for future demand across a city, particularly those who want to improve technological access.

Scaling 5G growth

Nokia holds extensive experience in deploying global large-scale network solutions. In 2023, the company launched anyRAN to offer customers greater flexibility concerning Cloud RAN and has since completed numerous trials within the wider industry.

Such a renewed focus on its RAN strategy has been essential when it comes to supporting businesses and their mission-critical operations. Nokia is ultimately aiming to accelerate 5G adoption in these enterprise sectors and ultimately bolster their digital transformation efforts.

“We are proud to collaborate with NTT DATA to deliver best-in-class network solutions that enhance public services and accelerate the digital transformation of key sectors such as smart cities and airports,” comments Mark Atkinson, Head of RAN at Nokia.

“Nokia’s Private 5G RAN, combined with NTT DATA’s technology services, creates the ideal platform for a wide range of use cases and we look forward to partnering on further innovations together.”

Alongside this, NTT Data has been seamlessly integrating IT and OT applications to ensure reliable and secure high-performance Private 5G networks. These will not only be capable of scaling growth, but also enable enterprises to use technologies like AI, IoT and edge computing to drive greater efficiency and innovation within their organisation.

In addition to the Brownsville development, both companies have partnered to deliver Private 5G solutions for Cologne Bonn Airport and Fraport AG, Germany’s largest airport. The goal is to empower these organisations to enable greater real-time, data-driven decision-making.
