LG achieves an industry-leading certification for its 5G private network solution as it advances its position in a demanding market for customised networks

LG Electronics is eager to step up its presence in the 5G private network market.

As businesses continue to invest in these essential infrastructures for the future development of their industries, the company has become the first in the 5G private network industry to receive the “Domestic Network Equipment Certification”. Awarded by the Korean Association of Network Industries, LG received the honour for its self-developed 5G private network solution.

LG has achieved recognition for its 5G services

The award is given to products that are developed and manufactured in South Korea and is a key credential when it comes to businesses supplying their offerings to public institutions.

As a result, LG has obtained official recognition for internalising core 5G private network technologies, at a time where many telecommunications companies are powering ahead with scaling up their networks to meet customer demand.

Why 5G private networks are important

A 5G private network is a customised network that is deployed in specific areas like factories and buildings.

They are designed to offer high-speed data transmission and exceptional stability as they serve as a vital foundation for innovations such as AI transformation and smart factory operations.

Broadly, the global 5G private network market is expected to grow rapidly, from approximately US$2bn in 2023 to roughly US$11.8bn by 2028. This is a projected annual growth rate that exceeds 40%, according to market research firm MarketsandMarkets.

For LG, the company’s own solution leveraged advanced software to handle network functions that are typically managed by traditional 5G equipment like Radio Access Network (RAN) and 5G Core. Such a software-based approach allows for faster data processing and an improvement in stability, in addition to added benefits of upgrades without hardware replacement to reduce operational costs.

With its software, LG delivers a customised 5G private network that is tailored to meet the individual needs of each client. For instance, the company states it can create secure and isolated networks for those needing high levels of security, in addition to being able to integrate external cloud services for companies that require frequent collaboration with external partners.

Bolstering customer services

In addition to network setup, LG’s solution offers a device control platform for seamless management of connected devices. This includes LG’s own products, such as robots and digital signage, as well as clients’ existing equipment like CCTV and smart safety devices, all which are all integrated via the 5G private network.

With the new certification, LG is planning to pursue both enterprise-focused and public 5G private network initiatives, targeting sectors like smart factories.

In recent months, the company has committed significant resources to technology development. Currently, it holds roughly 30,000 telecommunications patents, many of which are related to 5G, in addition to its facilities-based telecommunications business to its portfolio - designed to fully commercialise its 5G solutions.

“We will continue to provide customised 5G private network solutions for clients who need fast, stable networks, leveraging our outstanding 5G technology and operational expertise, accumulated in various sectors such as factories, logistics centres and hospitals,” says Lee Jun-sung, Vice President and Head of LG’s Private Network Business Development Department.
