Telco partnerships are powering the next era of mobile connectivity
To conclude 2024, we look at some of the largest stories within the telco sector. From AMD to MWC, here is our look at February…
AMD continues to support telcos

Having debuted new software solutions at MWC Barcelona 2024, AMD is continuing to expand its telco partner ecosystems to break ground in 5G innovation. As it continues to lead in AI, AMD is focusing on its relationships with telcos in order to diversify their networks.

As its share prices continue to soar, the semiconductor company is focusing its attention on communications services providers (CSPs) who need powerful and scalable platforms that also do not compromise on energy efficiency or costs.

AMD is working to expand its product portfolio from processors for 5G networking, to telco accelerators and adaptive computing for wireless infrastructure. For instance, AMD telco accelerator cards are able to free up telco server processors for more commercialised software functions - allowing easier deployment for the 5G virtualised edge.

5G operators are moving away from the more traditional proprietary wireless equipment and instead opting for a more open telco server approach. A more virtualised 5G allows telco services to be offered at the edge, which includes video streaming and gaming.

With this in mind, AMD is seeking to break new ground in the telco sector via 5G and compute innovations. The company’s EPYC processors aim to deliver high performance and reduce energy consumption, enabling users to meet higher demands with fewer physical servers - ultimately lowering network and cooling costs for telco operators.

The processors are being used by the likes of Ericsson and Telstra to deliver energy efficiency and modernisation for innovative 5G core functions. According to Ericsson, the EPYC CPUs can deliver up to 49% less energy consumption.

How T-Mobile Enables Innovative Wholesale Solutions

T-Mobile enables innovative wholesale solutions

With the United States’ largest 5G network, T-Mobile is truly a leader when it comes to innovating in wireless and beyond.

With a network covering more than 330 million people across two million square miles – more than AT&T and Verizon combined. T-Mobile reaches more than 300 million people with Ultra Capacity, nearly everyone in the country.

“At T-Mobile, we actually don't consider ourselves a carrier,” explains Dan Thygesen, Senior Vice President of T-Mobile Wholesale and head of T-Mobile’s growing wholesale business. “We call ourselves the Un-carrier because we spend a lot of time and effort trying to solve problems that our customers experience across the consumer, B2B and Wholesale channels.”

As Thygesen describes, when it comes to Wholesale in particular, T-Mobile offers a full series of solutions from a comprehensive suite of products for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) to innovative IoT offerings that move the world forward.

“Everything between consumer and B2B is heavily branded in terms of the actual value proposition and the products,” he explains. “The third part is Wholesale, where we invite and engage third parties to come and utilise our network.”

Central to this is innovating to enable partners – and T-Mobile itself – to succeed. “We're always looking for interesting and unique ways to be innovative about how we remove obstacles for our partners who are putting products into the marketplace.”
